Making, wearing and sometimes selling all forms of wearable art since 1997.
Abbey Starr was founded by self-taught seamstress and textile artist Abbey in 1997. Her focus was creating hand sewn clothing for friends and family using upcycled fabrics, reimagined clothes from thrift stores and unfinished quilt tops.
At the time of its conception, it had no name - it was just a way to create art for sale at music festivals and concerts. Over the last 25 years it’s remained that same small and manageable business that existed solely for the creation of true art. Wearable art. Usable art.
Abbey learned to sew by hand when very young. During breaks from school she’d carefully stitch quilt squares for her Grandmother to use in her quilt-making.
While traveling the country in the late 90s, she bought an extremely inexpensive and barely functional sewing machine, determined to produce beautiful and unique articles of clothing.
In the summer of 1997 Abbey sold her first handmade patchwork dress in a parking lot in Portland, Oregon. Afterwards she began to sew more dresses, apron tops, skirts, pants, bags, pipe pouches, and accessories. She made a meager living selling those clothes at festivals and in funky headshops around the Little 5 Points area of Atlanta.
Sewing has taken Abbey all around this earth and she’s still absolutely in love with the act of creation. Every piece made is the artistic vision of a textile artist that has come to fruition.
Specializing in all things patchwork - dresses, skirts, pants, apron tops, pipe pouches and bags, small quilts and other household accessories - but also able to work with ANY fabric, printed or solids.
Custom work and larger sizes are very welcomed to commission! If the store doesn’t have something already made that you want, we will work with you to create something that you both love and feel comfortable in.
Abbey can also work with YOUR fabric. Your old concert t-shirts, your granny’s stash, your baby’s onesies, your favorite sheets- anything.
Abbey uses “Earth friendly”, sustainable fabrics that are procured secondhand whenever possible. This is in an effort to reduce, re-use and recycle. I also buy linens, cottons and other natural blend fabrics that are hand dyed (without chemicals) at home.
